ESPN , Rogers Sportsnet , and ESPN America telecast the event, while ESPN Radio broadcast on radio. On Wednesday, Gameday announced who was selected to participate in the 1st Home Run Derby contest on Friday, and list is pretty impressive to say the least. Headlining the contestants is Westfield's Ryan Williams, and Potomac's Ryan Moriarty.
If he swings at a pitch and misses or hits the pitch anywhere but in home run territory, it is considered an out. Each player hits until he receives 10 outs in each round. West Springfield's Tucker Tobin was one of the hotter hitters in the state playoffs, and he'll be present on Friday night in Gameday's 1st Home Run Derby at Chantilly High School. Fielder keeps going and his next homer is the longest of the night so far at 503 feet. He finishes the second round with six homers, which gives him 17 home runs total.
Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby participants
Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Since the inaugural derby in 1985, the event has seen several rule changes, evolving from a short outs-based competition, to multiple rounds, and eventually a bracket-style timed event. The story of the night heading into the 2022 Derby was Pete Alonso's quest for his third straight title. By the end, it was all about the two young superstars in Soto and Rodríguez. The two put on a show all night, but Soto walked it off in the final round with 19 home runs.
Howard dropped six balls into the Allegheny River -- four on the fly, two on the bounce -- en route to a Derby victory. This year's competition shook up the rule book with players posting the highest totals across Rounds 1 and 2 advancing to the finals, rather than resetting the tally each round like in previous years. Pujols won the National League fan vote, as he did for the All-Star team. Each participant is thrown pitches by a pitcher of his choice. The hitter has the option of not swinging at a pitch.

And then he gets his last homer and it’s Nelson Cruz and Prince Fielder in the finals. Ryan “1 million strikeouts served” Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies is our sixth hitter tonight. He starts off much like Prince and Nelson, hitting about one homer for every out. The announcers draw our attention to Howard’s bling and seriously. Howard ends up with 7 homers, his longest at 434 feet. All Pujols and Mauer have to do is hit 8 homers to advance.

Chris Berman has gained notoriety for his annual hosting duties on ESPN, including his catchphrase, "Back back back...Gone!". Berman starts this phrase when the ball is hit, and does not say "Gone!" until the ball lands. On July 11, 1988, the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Cincinnati, TBS televised the annual All-Star Gala from the Cincinnati Zoo. Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage. Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain.
Home Run Derby
An out is recorded on any ball that isn't hit for a home run. The top 4 hitters who total the most home runs in the 1st round will advance to round two, and the top 2 hitters in the second round will advance to the finals. A look at the eight contestants, including two high school players, for the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby tonight at PGE Park. The six professional players have combined to hit 96 home runs through Saturday. By the time Howard has gotten to 7 outs, he’s put up 5 home runs, giving him 12 total and putting him in the lead. Howard then gets two quick outs but manages to hit the Golden Ball out three and ends the round with 15 total.
Williams finished his senior season with 6 home runs for the Bulldogs, and came close to several more yard balls this spring. The shortstop will be heading to William and Mary next fall to play for the Tribe, and should be considered a favorite to win Home Run Derby. Well if it was a home "rum" contest I just might make a good showin'..but home "run"? I used to drink rum at home, but i didn't wear a derby... Now i have switched to bourbon while wearing a baseball cap ...
Southern League Home Run Derby Participants Announced
The four-minute round length was made permanent in 2016, while the minute of bonus time was reduced to 30 seconds and required two home runs of at least 440 feet (134.1 m). Each batter is allowed one time-out during each round, and two in the finals. Beginning in 1991, the format changed to a 3-round contest. From 1991 to 2006, 8-10 players were selected and hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 10 outs in each round.

Pena’s first swing is a homer, then next is a foul ball, then a bloop into the outfield. He doesn’t do anything with his last two swings, so Pena ends up with one home run. The derby was first nationally televised by ESPN in 1993 on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998. Although two hours are scheduled in programming listings for the telecast, it has rarely ever been contained to the timeslot and consistently runs three to four hours.
Strawberry and Joyner led the way with four jacks each, and the NL won, 8-7, thanks to Parker's runner-up three homers. Fielder joined his father as the second member of his family to compete in the Derby, but he did something the elder Fielder never accomplished -- he won it. They're the first and only father-son duo to ever participate.
Pena is leading the American League with 24 home runs but does not get off to a great start, getting three quick outs before just squeaking one over the fence for his first home run. I’m sorry, I dozed off because Pena is taking so freaking long to get through this. There was talk before this started about some fancy-schmancy Doppler technology that is supposed to show us when a ball is leaving the park. Prince does similarly to Nelson Cruz, hitting 11 home runs too. To win something this year, I can bet 100% that with that roster of players, the final two WILL be N.L. Players are good players, but no home run derby standouts.
In honor of the World Baseball Classic, the 2005 contest featured eight players from different countries. The event has grown significantly from its roots in the 1980s, when it was not televised. Prior to 1991, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each player receiving five outs per inning, allowing for the possibility of ties.
State Farm continued this in 2007 as they designated $17,000 per home run (one dollar for each of State Farm's agencies), to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event. For 2009, State Farm added $5,000 for all non-Gold Ball homers, and $517,000 was collected. For 2010, the non-Gold Ball homer was reduced to $3,000 per home run and a total of $453,000 was collected. Since 2014 any homer hit off a T-Mobile Ball resulted in a $10,000 donation to charity by T-Mobile and MLB, to Team Rubicon. In the early years of the Home Run Derby, 4-10 players from both the AL and NL were selected to participate.
After two quick outs, he finally belts one to left center field but then gets five more quick outs before he finally gets his second and third homers. He has to get six to advance, five to get into a playoff for the last spot. Weather concerns in 2015 led to a reduction in time from five minutes per round to four minutes. The clock was not stopped in the final minute, and one minute of bonus time was granted only for hitting two home runs of at least 425 feet (129.5 m). In 2000, the field reverted to the current four-player-per-league format.

Mauer is a rare find in a catcher who has won two batting titles. Tonight he isn’t on fire and ends up with 5, which ties him with Carlos Pena. Nelson Cruz for the Texas Rangers is up first, he’s got the second most home runs in the American League with 22 and he’s just a rookie. Tonight he stays pretty much even between home runs and outs, ending the first round with 11 homers. He hits some absolutely monster bombs, reaching the 3rd and 4th tiers of the outfield searing. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round.
